A failure of religious leaders

By Hank Zumach, December 03, 2008

The random slaughter of innocents in Mumbai last week. The ongoing live burial of young girls in Afghanistan because they want to choose whether to marry. Hindus and Muslims killing each other in India and Pakistan. Christians and Muslims killing each other by the hundreds in Nigeria. Muslims’ attack on the United States on 9/11. Jews justifying military conquest because their God promised them the land more than 3,000 years ago. Irish Catholics and Protestants killing each other for 350 years. Christian Germany trying to exterminate the Jews.

Christians killing “witches” over the centuries in Europe and killing them today in Africa. Heretics burned at the stake or beheaded. Catholics killing Eastern Orthodox Christians killing Muslims killing Catholics in the Balkans for more than 1,000 years. Christians enslaving dark skinned people because they were deemed the Bible’s children of Ham. Homosexuals killed and imprisoned by Muslims, Jews and Christians because of the way they were born. The suppression of women the world over in the name of God(s). And the list goes on.

How can this be? How can the bishops and rabbis and imams claim “moral” leadership when religion is behind such evil actions? Peace on earth and goodwill toward mankind will not happen under such leadership until decisions are based on facts, reason, and true concern for all people, not just those who share ancient superstitions and myths.
